If you're looking to go for the traditional calligraphy route, this set is great for beginners. It comes with a variety of nibs (tips) to get started with and find what feels comfortable for you.

Paper is REALLY important when doing your lettering. Using the wrong weight or texture can ruin your pens. This pad is great not just because it's the right material, but also because it's got guide dots which will help you practice spacing.

Once you've got the hang of your lettering, this is the pad I use for my creations! The paper is thick and great quality.
Canson® XL® Mix Media Pad
Might sound silly, but this paper is great for practicing. Use a pencil and just get used to making the proper movements and spacing for your letters. Your not going to get the lines of various thickness, but you can still practice the varying levels...
Handwriting Paper (Long Ruled Bulk)
Once you have the hang of things, this Prismacolor set is great for adding details and embellishments to your designs.
